What is Bandwidth Throttling?

Bandwidth Throttling is a mechanism that limits the amount of bandwidth that can be used to download content to native apps (iOS, Android, and Windows). Bandwidth Throttling does not apply to the Web App.

Why use Bandwidth Throttling?

If you have mission critical services that are impacted when there is contention on the network, Bandwidth Throttling can help to mitigate the disruption. Some mission critical services like a point-of-sale system and VoIP phone systems can be severely impacted when your network is saturated / over-utilized. Bandwidth Throttling is one mechanism that can help to "protect" your network from disrupting other mission critical services.

How Does Bandwidth Throttling Work?

PlayerLync's implementation of Bandwidth Throttling is controlled from the PlayerLync server. The server is configured to limit the number of simultaneous content downloads and the amount of bandwidth each download can consume. If the number of content downloads are exceeded, the server will send the app a custom code to back-off and try again later.

How Do I Enable Bandwidth Throttling?

Please contact the PlayerLync Support Team and provide them with the following information:

  • Maximum number of simultaneous downloads you want supported
  • Amount of bandwidth in Mbps you want allowed per download connection

Once this information has been received, the PlayerLync Support Team will submit a Request for Change. The typical turnaround time is 5 business days.
